CUSTOMERS in a buzzing St Kilda cafe have been banned from talking about Facebook.

A sign in the shop window says discussions about the online social network are barred while customers are there.

Daniel Mrocki, proprietor of Cafe Brewhaha, said he was tired of the seemingly endless rhetoric about the internet community reverberating around the coffee shop.

''People would be talking about how many new friends they would have online, or who had 'friend-requested' them and so on . . . it's just a massive popularity contest and I, for one, was sick of hearing about it,'' he said.

''I took a stand because I think people should be able to sit down and have normal conversations and not live behind these pseudo identities on the internet.''

The sign says: ''Talking about Facebook is strictly prohibited on these premises''.

Mr Mrocki said the reaction to the ban had been good.

''We've had a lot of people stopping to take photos,'' he said.

''The irony is they will probably end up on Facebook.''
