THE Greens have announced Neil Pilling will stand for the council elections in November to push Glen Eira for more action on climate change.
Mr Pilling, a Carnegie resident, told the Leader he will make a bid to represent the Rosstown Ward.
"It seems that sea levels would have to be lapping Nepean Highway before some of the council would see the need to seriously engage with climate change," Mr Pilling said.
He expressed concern about the standard of local government in Glen Eira, which he said lagged badly behind the environmental performance of neighbouring councils.
Mr Pilling said the Bayside/Glen Eira branch of the Greens party was seeking candidates for the Camden Ward.
"The Greens' vote in Camden is particularly strong and it is the only ward in which all three councillors voted against Glen Eira joining Cities for Climate Protection last year," he said.
Glen Eira Mayor Steven Tang, who put forward the motion for the council to join CCP last year, defended the council's environmental track record.
"Glen Eira is committed to a number of environmental and sustainability initiatives," Cr Tang said, "including increasing waste diversion rates, partnering with LESS to be the first Victorian council to offer the light globe replacement program, using environmentally sensitive design, planting extra street trees, drought tolerant grasses and more."
Meanwhile, the council has deferred its annual environment forum, scheduled for next month.
